Deep Vein Thrombosis is an issue for business travellers especially when travelling long haul. Because you will be seated for long periods of time and will be almost motionless, the risk of blood clots in the legs can increase. This is known as deep vein thrombosis or DVT. Some medications, some medical conditions and a family history of clots and blood disorders can also increase the risk. The airlines are clear to point this out.

You will be shown a film after take off. Alternatively, this film will be available on one of the channels on the entertainment system. In the film, they will demonstrate a series of exercises which are recommended. If a film is not shown, then you will be directed to a section in the in-flight magazine. The information and exercises will be presented there. These exercises include knee lifts, flexing exercises, neck and shoulder rolls, ankle circles to name a few. They can be done while seated and it is also recommended that you get up and move around as much as you can to stretch your legs. And if you are lucky enough to be flying Air China, every two hours, the flight attendants lead an 5 minute exercise session! Compression stockings are recommended to prevent swelling of the ankles and feet especially for people who experience “high risk” factors.

Deep vein thrombosis is sometimes referred to as economy class syndrome but this is a misnomer. It is as likely to occur in business and first class as economy class and should be taken seriously.
