Finding the best plane seat in economy just requires an understanding of how airplanes are configured. You should also plan ahead to optimize your selection and ensure you get it. Airlines configure seating to their own specifications therefore this will vary by airline. Seat pitch is the distance between seats. Seat pitch varies by airline and aircraft but can be less than 30cm. The style of seat varies also and the airlines are constantly working on innovations to improve the “sit-ability” of the seats on the flight. The best idea is to try to check in early. Try for an exit row where the seat pitch is wider to allow passengers to exit quickly in case of an emergency. Some airlines charge extra for these rows of seats. But it may be worth it especially if you are 180cm tall. If the airline charges extra for these seats, you will be able to book this seat at the time of booking or when you are completing online check in.

Some people like the window because they can curl up against it and sleep better. The downside of the window seat on long haul flights is that you will be needing to get past 2 or 3 people to get up to stretch your legs or use the bathroom. The aisle seat on the other hand gives you easy access to the aisle. It may not be as good for sleeping and there is the risk of being disturbed by passing food and beverage trolleys however.

The undisputed worst seats are those in the middle at the back where turbulence creates the greatest impact. However it is usually cooler down the back if you struggle with the temperature on airplanes.

What is Premium Economy and choosing a premium economy best plane seat just requires some understanding and forward planning. If you are flying long haul, choosing a premium economy best plane seat is critical. On most long haul services, there is a class called premium economy. It may have a specific brand name on the airline you are flying.

It is essentially “half way” between economy and business class. This class usually encompasses a wider economy class seat with longer leg room or seat pitch (up to 25% more leg room) and extra seat-back recline for sleeping. The food and wine menu is also more extensive and better than in economy. The price is about 25-50% more than full fare economy class. The frequent flyer points reflect that and while class is new, the frequent flyer points to price ratio are relatively good value. Other benefits may include greater luggage allowances, larger video screens, in seat laptop power, adjustable head rests, priority boarding and self-service snack and drinks in flight. Most importantly, most airlines offering premium economy on long-haul flights have check-in areas for this class which reduces wait times and bottlenecks at check-in.

Not all flights for a particular airline will offer premium economy service. To learn more about this and what the seat pitch and layout is Click here

A discussion about the Business Class and the best plane seat comes with a discussion about how airlines present their brands. Most airlines now have an international business class seat for long-haul flights. Typically it will convert to a flat bed but the incline of the “flat” bed will vary by airline. British Airlines, for example, were the first to introduce this seat. When the seat is in the bed position, it is flat and parallel with the floor (like a regular bed). On some airlines, the seat converts to a flat bed that is on an incline (which can be a bit of a “slide” when you are sleeping). The length of the seat in the “bed” position will vary also which will be of concern if you are tall.

Some international airlines only offer this seat on flights which are longer than a pre-determined length. These flights usually involve flying time in the night. For example, if you are flying business class within Asia on flights which may be 4 hours, a different aircraft will be in operation. It will most likely have a comfortable arm chair style seat which reclines well. To check which flight on which airline offers which seat read more here.

The food and drinks menu will provide an extensive choice. The service including staff, crockery, linen and glassware will be closer to restaurant quality. There is service provided throughout the flight so even outside the normal mealtimes, there will snacks and fruit available. This is sometimes found in a bar area at the front or rear of the cabin. You can help yourself to as and when you like.

Each seat will have a personal screen for the entertainment. The choice of movies, television channels, music, radio and games will be greater than in economy.

Usually there is in-seat power for using laptops and other portable devices, like games consoles and tablets. Quickly search for the right Power Voltage Adaptors by country.

French champagne, the very best food, presented extremely well with the best service can be expected in first class. Some airlines have onboard chefs to prepare your meal for you. You will be able to chose when you want to eat as there are no set times for meals.

The seats will convert to beds which are flat and parallel to the floor. On most airlines you will be offered your own set of pajamas. Duvets and sheets are provided for better sleeping also. The bathrooms are bigger and you can mostly determine when you want your meals and any other service. The seats are set up in pods and the newest innovation is the private cubicles with sliding doors. This has been launched on at least 2 major airlines. Each airline has a brand name for these so what they are called will vary depending on the airline.

Some Airlines offer showers in first class (Emirates) and on Etihad they have “The Residence”. “The Residence” is described my Etihad as “a bespoke” service and the only “three room suite in the sky”. Take a look at their website here.

The entertainment on offer has hundreds of choices in newspapers, magazines, movies, tv shows, radio, music and in seat power is available also.

Some airlines will provide limousine service to and from the airport. Some airlines have designated first class lounges at major international airports or separate areas allocated for first class passengers.

A separate telephone number for calling the airline is available and of course you will be answered immediately.

Most companies do not have first class travel as part of the travel policy. You may want to treat yourself to an upgrade with your frequent flyer points just to have the experience!

On domestic flights, again the offer differs depending on the airline. It will always include better food and wine and more choice across all entertainment option.

Upper deck (on Boeing 747 or A380 aircraft) over lower is recommended for minimizing noise levels. However, mostly the noise will be determined by how many babies, rowdy passengers and how close you are to the bathroom. Baby cots are usually placed on bulk-heads at the front of the economy section so avoid this if the noise will bother you.

The best bet for minimizing noise levels is to use earplugs and/or headphones. You can wear the headphones while you sleep tuned to music channel that suits you best. Also consider investing in noise reduction headphones. Click here to learn more about noise cancelling headphones.

                • Galley (kitchen), lavatory, exit row and closet locations.

Remember that not all aircraft on the same airline have the same seating approach. Use this tool to ensure you know what seat type you will be getting prior to making a reservation.

Some airlines do not “show” the seat availability until you have booked and paid for a ticket so you have already paid before you know that the only available seats are middle seats. If you are flying long-haul, this may be very important to you. Here is a website that can show you this ahead of time. It is not a booking site, just shows the seat availability on flights. This will assist with seat selection. You can also set it up to alert you to the exact seat you want if and when it becomes available www.expertflyer.com

Boarding the plane is simple but people get distracted and hold up the process. Once you have boarding plane, you need to get to your seat. This is nominated on your boarding card. You need to get your carry on baggage into an overhead locker or under the seat in front of you. If you are in an “exit row”, you will have to put all carry on items in the overhead locker. This is to ensure the row is free or obstacles in case the emergency exit is require. Take your book or magazines out of your bag prior to stowing your luggage so that you do not need to disturb other passengers when you are in the air.

It is not necessary to climb over other passengers to get to your seat. If the aisle seat has someone in it and you are in the window seat then ask the person sitting on the aisle if they will stand up so you can get in. Once seated, put on your seat belt. Then take a look at the emergency card to familiarize yourself with emergency exits. You will find the safety briefing card in the seat pocket in front of you.

Once all the passengers are on board and the doors are closed, the safety briefing will be presented on screen or the flight attendants will run through it. Make sure you pay attention to this. It may take place while you are taxiing but will always be completed prior to take off. Do not speak to other people while the safety briefing is occurring. You may be familiar with it but the person sitting next to you may be a first time flyer or a nervous flyer.

In the air, pay attention to the seat belt sign and the lavatory signs. If the lavatory is occupied a light will show that so there is no point getting up. On some airlines, it is also an offence to congregate around lavatories.

For example, discount airlines may expect you to purchase your drinks and snacks from a menu card in the seat pocket. Alternatively you may be offered the opportunity to order and pay for this when you are making your reservation. On short-haul flights on regular service airlines, a meal may be provided at meal times or only a snack in between meal times. On an international, long-haul flight, 2 meals (dinner and breakfast, for example) may be served with snacks available in between.

Special Meals can be ordered when making your reservation. There are usually many options for special meals based on preference, dietary requirements and religious beliefs. Take a look at your airline website for details. If you do chose a special menu, it will be presented to you usually ahead of other passengers meal service.

On long-haul international flights, often a menu is provided which will outline choices. A choice of 2 different main courses may be offered in economy class. An extensive menu of options will most likely be offered in business and first class. A choice of drinks will be offered and it is best to go easy on the alcohol as it is extremely dehydrating.

                    Hot Tip:

Details on specific airline’s entertainment, food and beverage offers are outlined on their website alongside the flight number. The flight number is important because depending on the time of the flight, the meal service may differ. For example a breakfast menu will be offered in the morning and a dinner menu in the evening.

The entertainment options on airplanes are vast and increasing. There will be an airline magazine in the seat pocket in front of you. This is usually issued monthly so has up to date articles on travel destinations, what is on in a number of cities and interviews with prominent people. It will also have the channel selection for music, comedy and other radio channels. It will show movie channel options if they are provided (most airlines except discount airlines). On long distance international flights, a separate entertainment brochure will be in your seat pocket. It will outline the music, radio, video and games channel options. There may be games channels and free-to-air television channels also.

Headphones will be provided and some airlines, there will be a small charge for these. If you are traveling long distance regularly, you may want to invest in a pair of noise canceling headphones. Some airlines hand these out in business and/or first class and they are good at almost eliminating the engine noise from the aircraft. To learn more about noise cancelling headphones, click here.

On long-haul flights, even in economy class, in-seat videos are increasingly available on the back of all seats. The newer systems provide multiple channels including movies, TV shows, music, radio, podcasts and interactive games. The older systems provide less movie channels and run on tape systems which means you have to wait until all the programs finish and recycle prior to being able to watch them again. Depending on the airline and the stage they are at in upgrading (if they are in the process) will determine what you will get. For most airlines, this is outlined on the airline website.

Some airlines provide in seat USB connections. This is useful for keeping your tablet/phone charged while you are travelling. You can also use it to bring you own selection of show and movies to watch.

One new development in airline entertainment is not to provide in seat screens but still provide a full range of movies, TV shows, podcasts, music and radio stations. If this is the case, how it works is that you download the airline entertainment app before you fly onto your phone or tablet. Then in the air, the airline’s entertainment options are streamed through the app. What this means is that you need a tablet or smart phone to watch the entertainment. MOST IMPORTANTLY you need to download the app before you fly. Qantas and Cathay Pacific are two airlines progressively moving to this approach. The airlines are doing this because it saves them money installing screens in every seat!.

Some airlines allow the use of these devices all through the flight. However you need to make sure they are switched to “flight mode” before the aircraft takes off. The flight attendant will inform you about this in the safety briefing at the beginning of the flight. If you are traveling in business or first class there will be a power in your seat. It could be a power point style or USB. Increasingly USB ports are available in all classes. The flight attendants will ask you to disconnect the power source for take off and landing. This is only to ensure that the power on the aircraft is optimized to fly it.

You may need a power cable for a specific airline. They will sell on the aircraft but you will pay 2-3 times what it costs in a retail shop. It is best to find out what cable/adaptor you will need prior to flying so you can purchase it ahead of time. If you plan to work on the plane for longer than your battery life will allow, you should sort this out ahead of time. Click here to learn more about adaptors.

On long-distance flights, you will need to try to get some rest and hopefully sleeping works for you. Getting into the new time zone is imperative so try to commence that process on board. A first step is to determine when you are going to go to sleep. Sleeping pills may be a good idea to assist if you need them. See your doctor for advice about this option.

Make sure you have a bottle of water with you during the night. This way you can access it when you need it. Flight attendants can provide water and often offer bottles of water when lights are out. However, by the time you press the flight attendant call button, wait for the flight attendant to come, then ask for water. Followed by waiting for water to be returned, you have been awake for at least 10 minutes. Therefore having a bottle of water with you for the evening is worth considering. In business and first class on long distance flights, most airlines have seats which recline to flat beds. This makes sleeping much more comfortable. Some airlines have better seats than others. While the seat in business class may recline to a flat bed, the angle of the flat bed is not 90 degrees on all airlines. As a result some can be awkward as you can slide down the angle. In first class, the seats recline to flat beds at 90 degrees and are longer and wider than in business class. This is a real treat if you have the opportunity.

After the meal service, the lights in the cabin will most likely be turned off for up to many hours to encourage time for sleeping. There are overhead lights and often in-seat lights which are useful for reading or working on your laptop, phone or tablet. The latter causes less interruption to the person sitting (or trying to sleep) next to you.
