Stay in Touch

While it will seem obvious, you need to stay in touch. If you are traveling extensively, your friends will get used to you not being around. They will begin to forget to contact you. Stay in touch. Call them as often as you would have if you were at home.

Remember birthdays and other special occasions. A message, a card or an email from a foreign country will make it more special. You can write cards prior to leaving saving you the need to find one while away. Get the concierge at the hotel to post it. You will be asked for the money for the stamp and the concierge will take care of it after that.

Be home for special events. Generally speaking, you can manage your schedule around these events and your job is just not that important.

Have an annual event/cocktail party at your house and invite all those people you may not have been able to catch up with during the year. It will be appreciated and your friends will acknowledge the effort you put in to stay in touch.
