Send Data and Make Calls from Airplanes

Now you can send data and make calls from airplanes from airplanes on some airlines. You will find an in-seat phone which you can dial from (and in some cases, receive calls from). This is an extremely expensive service but may be useful. Take a look at the airline magazine in the seat pocket for charges and the “how to” guide. There is usually a lot of static in the background when you use these phones.

Some international airlines have data plans which you can access from your Smart Phone while you are flying. This may be relevant for you especially when urgent work or responses are required. You can purchase these plans on an ad hoc basis.

Some American and European airlines have a facility to allow mobile phones to be used in the air once the airplane is at cruising altitude. Emirates has announced that it is fitting all its aircraft with this facility commencing with its Boeing 777’s. Qantas has this available on some flights. This technology allows you to make and receive emails, data, text messages and calls via your mobile phone. This technology will no doubt be launched on all airlines.

When you are in the air the communications will drop out especially over oceans where the distance is too great to have good coverage. The Pacific Ocean is definitely not fully covered. The connection will automatically reinstate once you reach effective coverage again. So if you want to send data or make calls from airplanes, be patient with the newness of the technology. It will improve with time.
