What to pack your toiletries in and how

Here are some tips for what to pack your toiletries in and how. You should have two toiletries bags. The best are men’s leather/canvas bags or heavy-duty plastic, soft-sided vanity cases. Leather or high quality plastic is better than canvas in case of spillages (unless the canvas is appropriately lined)

In one bag, put all the day-to-day items including all items that will cause a great mess if or when they spill. Put all hair related and non spillage items in the other one. For example, toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, deodorants, soap and toner should go in one and hair brushes, hairspray, shaving cream, moisturizers and paper products in the other one.

The biggest nightmare of a spillage is nail polish and these items do break or open and you may even just forget to tighten the lid properly. If you use nail polish, the best idea is to pack a nail kit in a separate small pack. You may want to paint nails when in watching TV so a separate bag is useful for this. There are brands of nail polish remover wipes available which at least removes the need for another bottle which may break. Nail polish remover is in fact on the “no fly” list because it is flammable. You should not pack nail polish remover in carry on or checked baggage.

You also need a separate bag for sunscreens so that you can easily take them to the beach/pool while you are away. Again the airline bags that are provided when traveling business or first class and sometimes economy or something similar are useful for this. These small bags will easily fit into the bigger bags and are useful carryalls.

Hot Tip:

You will accumulate many airline toiletries bags if you chose to accept them and bring them home. You do not have to take them and you can use them on the flight and then leave what you do not use behind. They will, however be a hit with guests in your home, your children or your nieces or nephew. You can always ask the flight attendant for the male version if you are female or vice versa.
